Here is the information in her original referral, when she was 5:

In early days of being admitted Yuan Xiaoni, Female, was found on April 2, 2003 at the entrance of the tunnel of Hujing Boulevard in Houjie Town of Dongguan City. Since the efforts looking for her birth parents ended fruitless, this child was sent to be under custody and raised in our institute on the same day upon approval of Municipal Bureau of Civil Affairs. Medical staff in our institute carried out physical examination for her and found that it was cleft from her upper lip till the basis of nose; the upper palate was cleft. Initial diagnosis: 1. premature baby, 2. congenital bilateral cleft lip and palate. According to the examination results and her development, her DOB was estimated on March 28, 2003. She was then named Yuan Xiaoni.

Yuan Xiaoni is active and would play crazily with familiar people but is timid and shy before strangers. She is effeminate and cries sometimes. She would play with her favorite friends.

I requested an update, and received some answers to questions on February 1, 2012:

1. Are there any delays or complications resulting from her cleft palate?

Her cleft lips and palate did not affect her development. She is a little shorter than kids of her age but not really different.

2. Her medical referral states that the surgery to close her palate was unsuccessful in completely closing it. Have they tried surgery again?

She had two surgeries to fix cleft lip and palate. Both surgeries were very successful.

3. Any update on size and growth?

Her weight is 24kg, height is 121cm, head is 49cm, chest is 57.5cm, foot is 17cm, she has 24 teeth.

4. Does she attend school?

She is in second grade in school. Her academic performance in school is upper medium. She is a very smart girl.

5. Is she living with a foster family?

She lives in the orphanage, not with a foster family.

6. Does she want to be adopted?

She has her own idea about everything. She worries about the language barrier and unknown circumstances in a new country. We explained to her that the new family will love her very much and help her to overcome any difficulty. Then she is happy to be adopted. She is very interested in knowing anything about the adoptive family.

And this update on February 22, 2012:

Yuan Xiaoni is in good health. Her only issues are cleft lip and poor eyesight. She studies in an outside school. She was under foster care since Sep.30 and came back in Jan.,2012. She is doing well.”

I sent a care package to her on her birthday and received a few pictures, as well as some pictures from another family traveling to adopt their child from Dongguan.

I received an update on sizes on October 25, 2012 with one new picture: Height 127cm, weight 23.9kg, head 52cm, chest 60cm.
