“Everywhere in nature we are taught the lessons of patience and waiting. We want things a long time before we get them and the fact that we wanted them a long time makes them all the more precious when they come.” ~unknown

~Ladybugs in Our Pockets~

Standing in the kitchen after church on Sunday, I asked Ian what he had spilled down the front of his white shirt. He looked down to find a little ladybug crawling along his pocket! Pictures were definitely in order! The next day after coming home from work, he again walked in the kitchen and looked down to find another little ladybug crawling up his arm! We laughed and, of course, I accused him of “planting” these little critters on himself. Why does Big Pop Daddy-o (as our kids call him) get to have all the fun? After all, he was the one with the great fortune in his fortune cookie this month! It said, “You will enjoy your trip to Asia”. I ran upstairs certain that my fortune would be just as exciting…only to find out that the kids had eaten the last cookie! And not to push the whole ladybug thing and all, but Christian came running in the house tonight shouting, “ladybug sighting”! He said that while he was walking the dog, he noticed a little ladybug crawling along his arm. Hmmmm…I do believe we still have a very long wait…

I have had a lot of fun this month sending and receiving wishes and fabric for Sophie’s One Hundred Good Wishes Quilt. We have received 25 wishes and some beautiful Asian print fabric this month! I can hardly wait to see how beautifully her quilt comes together. I would love to swap fabric/wishes with anyone who is also making a quilt for their son or daughter. If you would like to swap, please e-mail me at ladybug.lucky@hotmail.com.

We have almost filled our first mason jar with pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters. The kids have enthusiastically dropped various coins in our jar knowing that the money we save will help buy a special gift for Sophie’s orphanage. It has been a great way to help them feel involved. I can see how happy it makes them to know that what they are doing will help little ones who need it so much! With the wait the way it is right now, we should be able to fill our jar many times before we go to China.

This past month, I was able to listen to a woman speak of her time in China as a little girl and her story of how she came to live in America. It was wonderful and very inspiring. She said that the word “faith” is translated into Chinese by combining two different symbols…one for “believing” and the other for “heart”. We will continue to have faith and “believing hearts” that Sophie will join our family in His perfect timing. In the meantime, we will try to be patient knowing how precious this sweet gift will be…

What’s Up With the Kids?

Michael’s question for the month of May was, “how many more days until our 90 day break?” I’d have to admit that I’d been keeping a mental note of this countdown myself. Summer is, of course, my favorite time of year and is greatly anticipated by the little people at our house. May was incredibly busy with programs, performances, recitals, try-outs, carnivals, history fairs, science fairs, book reports and everything else that comes at the end of each school year. You could feel the excitement growing as we inched closer to summer break!

Jessica was thrilled to get a letter from the director of a local ballroom program inviting her to be a member of their youth team next year! Her hard work, determination and MANY insane hours of practicing have paid off! She is so excited! She is looking forward to the 9th Grade Social Leadership Ball…a formal evening to practice your best etiquette. I can’t believe she is almost old enough to go to high school!

Nathan
was once again able to pull off a great performance at his piano recital! He won a $20 dollar gift certificate to a music store (didn’t he win last year, too?). Some people have all the luck. He is proudly and diligently practicing all the country songs he was able to buy with his gift card. “Bless the Broken Road” by Rascal Flatts has been the song of choice the past few weeks. It’s amazing how many hours a kid will practice a song he likes. He has taken great pride in his new lawn mowing responsibilities! Jr. High!?! Oh my…

Christian
began the month with a broken wrist which didn’t slow him down a bit. He built a birdhouse with his scout troop which is now hanging in our backyard. We enjoyed watching a busy mama bird build her nest in his birdhouse and loved hearing the little chirps of new, baby birds! Christian took a first place ribbon at the Pinewood Derby with his flashy blue racer and just earned his Wolf rank in cub scouts. He is looking forward to his 9th birthday and his first “pack-in-with-horses” fishing trip with his Uncle Scott and cousins!

Michael continues to busy himself with as many artistic mediums as possible. He is anxiously anticipating a visit to a newly opened art store. He worked hard to memorize his lines for the 1st Grade “Walk through History” night and was part of the Boston Tea Party re-enactment. He looked darling in his period style clothing and proudly exclaimed, “wow…I look just like Captain Jack Sparrow”. Not quite the look we were going for, but he thought it was great! Michael is looking forward to lots of pool time, bike rides, hiking and camping.

Ahhhh…the lazy days of summer!

Look closely...it's a little ladybug!
